Mary, like all of Israel, was waiting, as they had been for as long as they could remember. As Rome increased taxes and challenged freedoms, as Roman soldiers bullied Hebrews in the street, the people of Israel yearned for a King, like David, one who would return to them a nation all their own. The promised Messiah, surely, would be a man of great wealth, wisdom, power and strength!
